We’ve been briefed that we should sit through the welcoming ceremony, as leaving could cause great offence.

The tropical sun is fierce, some of us have to sit on the ground, and the ceremony goes for at least an hour, but the warning seems superfluous. Who would miss such an energetic introduction to the Melanesian culture of these islands off the north-east coast of Papua New Guinea?
