The NRL grand final clash on Sunday between the Penrith Panthers and Melbourne Storm could be the most unsurprising contest in recent rugby league history.

The Panthers and Storm have won nine premierships between them since 2000. The Sydney team has won the last three titles, while the Melbourne side hasn’t missed a spot in the top eight since 2010. Since 2018, just one other team has won an NRL premiership: the Sydney Roosters.
