The dark truth behind the beauty of figure skating
London | Even for such an elegant sport, it was a particularly impressive routine. Kamila Valieva, the Russian 15-year-old figure skater, left spectators spellbound at Beijing’s Capital Indoor Stadium on Monday, when she became the first woman to land a quadruple jump at the Winter Olympics.
To the sound of Ravel’s Bolero, the teenage prodigy manoeuvred expertly around the ice in a black and red leotard. Then she leapt, making history by completing a quadruple salchow: four mid-air rotations, spun in the air for 0.7 seconds. She landed back on the ice on the outside edge of her right foot. Moments later she repeated the feat, this time with a quadruple toe loop to boot.
