Queenslander Zac Stubblety-Cook has claimed his place among Australia’s new generation of swimmers, setting the country up for success in future Olympic Games by taking gold in the men’s 200-metre breaststroke, beating the expectations even of his own mother.

The 22-year-old’s victory was followed by canoe slalom star Jessica Fox winning the first women’s C1 Olympic gold medal on offer, having missed gold earlier this week in the K1.
