Labor’s controversial sports broadcast plans heading for Senate fracas

Influential Senate crossbenchers are pushing for free streaming services run by major television networks to be given precedence in bidding for some of the country’s biggest sporting fixtures, concerned those matches could otherwise go behind paywalls for the first time under a Labor proposal.

But sporting codes chiefs, including Australian Rugby League Commission chairman Peter V’landys, have warned that this could lessen competition for lucrative match broadcast rights, hurting investment in grassroot sports and players.
