It was one of the great spectacles of tennis – a marvellous fillip to a mood soured by a protracted COVID-19 summer of shortages and frustrations.

By contrast, the atmosphere in a crowded Rod Laver Arena began in excitement and ended in jubilation at joining in such a grand spectacle.
