It didn’t start well thanks to omicron and the Djokovic imbroglio, but this year’s tournament has turned into one of the country’s most spectacular Opens so far.
It was one of the great spectacles of tennis – a marvellous fillip to a mood soured by a protracted COVID-19 summer of shortages and frustrations.
By contrast, the atmosphere in a crowded Rod Laver Arena began in excitement and ended in jubilation at joining in such a grand spectacle.
