Inside Donald Trump’s bromance with FIFA chief Gianni Infantino

The head of world soccer has wooed the US president by staging two World Cups in the United States, while enlisting a key ally in his war against the game’s European body.

Gianni Infantino was in the Oval Office almost seven years ago when he introduced Donald Trump, then in his first term as president of the United States, to the concept of soccer’s yellow and red cards.

The FIFA president was a much less globally established figure in 2018 – just a few weeks past his first World Cup finals at the head of the organisation he had ruled since shortly after its 2015 crisis.
