Walk inside the Magic Millions sales complex and there’s a loud noise every few minutes. It’s a sound so sharp and unexpected that it can pierce your ears and drown out the negotiations of potential buyers, the voice of the auctioneer, or even the neigh of a horse.

Roslyn Buerckner is one of the people making that noise. She and her colleagues work as Magic Millions bid spotters – the middlemen between the millionaires (or billionaires) and their preferred yearlings. It is their job to let the auctioneer know if someone has bid, which typically involves a sharp cry.
