Australia’s second week of the Tokyo Olympics changed gear from the frenetic run of victories in the pool to a cautious climb towards qualification, as athletes in a new range of sports stepped up to the start line.

The postponement of Monday’s planned sailing bouts due to a lack of wind – including final races for the 470 class dinghies that could have given men’s duo Mathew Belcher and Will Ryan an unassailable lead – symbolised the slowdown for the country, which held on to its fourth place in the medal tally with 14 gold, three silver and 14 bronze.
