Why this former retail darling dumped its CBD flagship

Fifty-year-old heritage brand Country Road is battling through a tough trading backdrop and closure of its flagship Sydney city stores.

When Country Road founder Stephen Bennett was first looking at the Queen Victoria Building for the brand’s flagship Sydney store in the early 1980s, taking over the site on the corner of George and Market streets was seen as “a gutsy move”.

Speaking to AFR Weekend, Bennett, who launched Country Road with a single store in St Kilda in 1974, said the recent closure of the QVB site pointed to changing trends in retail but did not necessarily spell the end of the brand he created, long known for its on-trend apparel and iconic items like logo T-shirts and bags.
