Steelmakers exempt from BHP’s beefed up emissions targets

BHP will require suppliers to have net zero emissions by 2050 but will not impose such a target on the customers who buy its commodities, as the miner declared half of its revenue would come from “future facing” commodities like copper, nickel and potash by 2030.

More than two years after promising to set goals for the “Scope 3” emissions of its customers, BHP provided more detail on its plans, saying it could not set a target for the Asian steelmakers that generate close to 75 per cent of its Scope 3 emissions and close to 72 per cent of total emissions in BHP’s value chain.
