Spotlight falls on outliers as miners embrace paid parental leave

Miners are sweetening benefits to attract female employees. Yet Macmahon – one of the country’s biggest employers – is resisting paid time off for new parents.

More employers than ever are offering new parents paid leave. They say it’s good for their workers and good for business, helping attract and retain good staff at a time when there’s plenty of competition for labour.

Last year, 68 per cent of businesses offered a form of paid parental leave, official data shows. And some of the country’s biggest employers are going above and beyond in the hope of being seen as attractive places to work. Major law firms, for instance, offer up to six months of paid leave.
