Mongolian adversity gives Rio Tinto a world of opportunity

Cost and schedule blow outs on the Oyu Tolgoi copper project are bad for Rio, but they are much worse news for the project's other investors.

In adversity there is opportunity, and a trouble-prone push into Mongolian copper is providing Rio Tinto with both in spades right now.

This week's revelation that an expansion of the Oyu Tolgoi mine could cost up to $US1.9 billion more than previously thought was bad for Rio, but it was far worse news for two other entities that live in Rio's shadow at Oyu Tolgoi.
