Former Rio Tinto boss Sam Walsh says it is time for an overhaul of the way mining companies interact with Indigenous communities and the ability of traditional owners to access the royalty riches accumulating in trusts under land-use agreements.
Walsh’s call comes as heritage issues, brought to a head by Rio Tinto’s blasting of ancient rock shelters at Juukan Gorge, pose a threat to iron ore production in Western Australia.
