Forrest says diesel rebate should go after 2025

Fortescue Metals chairman Andrew Forrest says big miners should lose a tax break on diesel consumption between 2025 and 2030 because he believes a viable, cleaner, locally produced alternative to diesel will be proven up by then.

But the push is unlikely to be adopted by either major political party given the Morrison government’s focus on “technology not taxes”, while shadow treasurer Jim Chalmers saidon Tuesday that “It’s not Labor’s policy to change the current diesel rebate”.
