Skills shortages in the resources sector are triggering contractor businesses to pay for flights for fly in, fly out workers and introduce residential allowances for staff living near mines.

Mackay-based Metarock, which has almost 2000 employees, said it had brought in these initiatives in the past year as an incentive to help retain workers in the hot sector.
