BHP Group's retreat from contract labour in Queensland coal is more cunning, broad-based and revolutionary than simply a re-embrace of the traditional direct employment model.

On Thursday we flagged that a BHP-managed coal joint venture, the BHP Mitsubishi Alliance, had decided to bring 350 contractor and casual jobs back in-house at its two most modern coal mines, Daunia and Caval Ridge.
