BHP cuts contractors at Kalgoorlie nickel smelter
BHP has cut contractors working on its Kalgoorlie nickel smelter and deferred plans for a 1000-bed camp to house workers needed to rebuild the ageing infrastructure, which is at risk of being mothballed.
The moves come as chief executive Mike Henry vowed to clarify the future of the loss-making division “as soon as practicably possible”.
A previous version of this story said that BHP’s application to build a 1000-bed camp was withdrawn; it was updated to reflect the application was deferred.
