For everyone involved with Bendigo Mining, it was a bitter pill to swallow. Three months after opening its new goldmine under the Victorian town of the same name, the company was forced to halt the operation due to a production shortfall. Once mining began, it had become clear that the amount of gold in the ground had been badly overestimated.
