Bendigo Mining (BDG)
The gold price is back above $US900 an ounce, but uncertainty continues to surround Bendigo Mining as the company moves closer to small-scale mining at the Gill Reef at its namesake project in Victoria. Macquarie Research Equities has maintained an "underperform" rating on the stock and a share price target of 30¢, based on the "uncertainty that continues to surround grade, ultimate production rates, costs and timing at Bendigo". Gill Reef has emerged as a one of the best near-term opportunities for Bendigo, which ceased mining last year after resource projections overestimated the actual grades and widths of the project's reefs. Macquarie noted that Bendigo has been frugal with its finances, reporting cash of $53 million at the end of the March quarter, down only $5 million from the previous three-month period. "Bendigo continues to plug away," Macquarie said. "We believe it is pursuing the right strategy having regard to its financial resources and technical challenges." Bendigo shares closed at 32.5¢ on Monday when this research report was prepared.
