TV broadcasters slam government’s media reform as ‘underwhelming’

Free-to-air TV broadcasters are disappointed the Morrison government is kicking anti-siphoning, spectrum tax and prominence issues to the long grass as it pushes forward with media reforms.

Free-to-air TV broadcasters have slammed the Morrison government for ignoring major industry issues, including restricting streaming services’ rights to major sporting events, as it presses on with its media reforms.

Communications Minister Paul Fletcher will announce the next steps in reforming the media landscape on Monday, including proposing local content quotas for global streaming players if they do not invest at least 5 per cent of their revenue in Australian commissions, alongside more government funding for the ABC and SBS.
