Actor Geoffrey Rush has won an $850,000 payout with the promise of much more to come after a comprehensive victory in his defamation battle with The Daily Telegraph.

Federal Court judge Michael Wigney denounced both the newspaper and Mr Rush's accuser - Eryn Jean Norvill - in a judgment that was immediately condemned by supporters of the #MeToo movement.
