A young reporter’s unpleasant experience of country politics

Zoe Askew was punished, and humiliated, for practising journalism.

A few weeks ago, Zoe Askew captained the Sale United Football Club to victory in the local Gippsland soccer league championship.

Even though Askew’s team won 19 out of 20 games this year, the bubbly 26-year-old journalist’s victory had a greater significance: a response to what looked like the petty use of power that sometimes mars small communities, overlaid with unacknowledged sexism.
