Aluminium giant Alcoa says it is too early to know whether employee numbers at its Portland smelter in Victoria will need to be cut after it was forced to partially backflip on a strategy to reopen idled capacity.
The smelter will operate at 75 per cent of capacity for an indefinite period because an equipment malfunction means the Portland facility cannot make enough of the electrically conductive rodded anodes needed to make aluminium.
