London | British billionaire Sanjeev Gupta has beefed up the Australian presence at the top of his global steel empire, handing the US operation to his key Antipodean lieutenants and putting a former Smorgon Steel boss on the seven-member board.

Mr Gupta has been consolidating the disparate steel businesses within his sprawlng GFG Alliance conglomerate into a single London-based, Singapore-incorporated company called Liberty Steel Group, which includes the Whyalla steelworks in South Australia.
