Albanese’s Whyalla rescue plan is a gamble on Australia’s future

Wasting subsidies on industries with poor growth prospects is not the way to restore Australian prosperity.

Anthony Albanese says his $2.4 billion rescue plan for the Whyalla steelworks is about transforming an unloved and old-fashioned manufacturing facility into a clean and green hydrogen steel maker of the future.

This is a stretch for even the most ardent of green steel proponents; hydrogen was once seen as the answer to all our carbon emission problems but has suffered a series of setbacks in recent years.
