Boral shuts down plants as economy sours

Boral Ltd is stepping up plant shutdowns in Australia in response to weaker demand as the economic fallout from COVID-19 worsens, while four of its plants in the United States have been temporarily closed and 25 per cent of its US workforce of 6900 stood down.

Boral chief executive Mike Kane said there was an ''emptying out of the pipeline'' of new orders in the construction industry in Australia and the United States, and the group was taking action so inventory levels didn't build up.
