GP referrals to be axed under proposed health shake-up

Patients will no longer have to see their doctor to get referrals to see specialists under a proposed shake-up of Australia’s healthcare system designed to reduce unnecessary GP visits and cut costs for patients.

Instead, other medical professionals, midwives and nurses could refer patients to some healthcare specialists under the recommendations of a year-long review into the rules governing healthcare workers being considered by Labor.
