Surgeons and other medical specialists are worried about unprecedented pressure on the nation’s hospital system and say the federal government needs to inject more funds into the private sector to stop facilities closing and tackle soaring insurance costs.

With no sign of movement on Health Minister Mark Butler’s review of the $22 billion private hospital system launched in June, specialists warn that dilapidated facilities, ageing medical equipment and staff shortages are threatening patient care.
