The Queensland lawyer at the heart of Star scandal

The casino company’s former top counsel, Paula Martin, should have warned the board about a potentially criminal junket operator, ASIC alleges.

The Star owns two casinos, including this one on the Gold Coast. They may have been used by organised crime to launder money.

On June 12, 2019, the Star Entertainment Group’s top lawyer, Paula Martin, received an email from a mid-level manager that contained disturbing allegations: the casino group’s top customer may have been involved in one of the biggest bank robberies in history.

Angus Buchanan, who was responsible for vetting customers at the casino operator, had sent the email, which contained a confidential report from the Hong Kong Jockey Club, according to a lawsuit against Martin and former Star directors filed on Tuesday.
