Westpac Banking Corporation chairman John McFarlane has appointed long serving group executive and acting chief executive Peter King to the role permanently.
Mr McFarlane said continuity was important at times of great stress and that he and Mr King were "completely aligned on what needs to be done" following the departure of CEO Brian Hartzer who stepped down during the AUSTRAC scandal.
