Value vs values battle raging despite ESG investing boom

Local investors are over-represented in the $50 trillion market for ethical, social and governance (ESG) investments, but their advisers remain sceptical.

The total value of investments managed in Australia under a “responsible investment framework” reached $1.54 trillion at the end of last year, up from $1.28 trillion in 2020.

The figure, estimated by the Responsible Investment Association of Australasia (RIAA), represents about 3 per cent of the global market for environmental, social and governance (ESG) investing, which is worth about US$35 trillion ($53 trillion), according to Bloomberg Intelligence.
