Bank of America’s Australia chief executive Joe Fayyad, most often found near Governor Phillip Tower in Sydney’s city centre, surprises with his lunch choice: Speedos, a casual but delicious coffee shop overlooking Bondi and sandwiched between rubbish bins and a surf school.

On the morning we’re due to meet, he surprises again: we’re shifting to North Bondi Fish because the wind is up and the endless eastern suburbs construction is apparently deafening – something the 50-year-old Fayyad knows because he lives just down the road. No sense in sticking with an uncomfortable plan when conditions change.
