The final chapter appears to have opened for embattled investment firm Pendal, which confirmed last month that it was in takeover talks with larger rival Perpetual.

It might be a somewhat ignominious end for BT Australia, the formidable funds management and investment banking powerhouse that dominated the Australian financial scene for decades, before the collapse of its US parent, Bankers Trust Corporation, resulted in its dismemberment.
