In May 2018, Richard Garman, a San Francisco-based partner of US private-equity investment firm FTV Capital, flew all the way to Jersey, an island in the English Channel just off the coast of France, for a round of golf.

His golfing buddy was former Financial Review Rich Lister, philanthropist and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) innovator Graham Tuckwell – then living in Jersey, though since returned to Melbourne. But Garman hadn't come all that way for the pleasure of Tuckwell's company.
