Santos says activist demands would deter climate targets being set

Lawyers acting for Santos say allegations by activist groups that the oil and gas producer deceived investors by issuing long-term emissions reduction targets risk deterring companies from even attempting to decarbonise.

Neil Young, KC, told the Federal Court that arguments put forward by the Australasian Centre for Corporate Responsibility – that companies must have viable projects and detailed modelling to back up climate targets – were “perverse” and would be a barrier to those goals.
