Refinery closure triggers 150 job cuts at chemical plant

The shutdown of ExxonMobil’s refinery in Melbourne has triggered the partial closure of a petrochemical manufacturing plant and the loss of 150 jobs, the first evidence of a feared broader fallout from the energy giant’s decision in February.

Later this year, Qenos will close one of its two ethylene units at Altona as well as one of two units that make the basic plastic polyethylene, the petrochemical maker said on Wednesday.
