NSW government pays $100m to Shenhua for scrapping coal mine

The NSW government has agreed to pay Chinese company Shenhua $100 million for abandoning its approvals to build a coal mine in the Liverpool Plains.

The move came as Queensland’s state-owned power company Stanwell Corporation flagged it may mothball its coal-fired power stations or close them before the end of their technical life as Australia moves towards a low-emissions economy.
