AEMO may call on emergency power reserves as NSW grid wilts

The Australian Energy Market Operator may need to call for emergency power reserves to reduce the risk of blackouts in NSW later on Thursday as searing heat stretches the electricity grid close to breaking point.

NSW Energy Minister Penny Sharpe on Thursday morning urged households and businesses to cut electricity use later in the day, if safe to do so. NSW government agencies are set to reduce air conditioning and switching off non-essential lights and equipment to help the grid cope.
