Meat prices are set to rise this year, says one of the nation’s largest agribusiness operators, as drought conditions in parts of Australia reduce livestock herds at a time when overseas demand is increasing.
Elders said the drought in southern Australia had resulted in a $12 million hit to earnings in the six months to March 31, although higher cattle and sheep prices had helped deliver a rebound in profit compared to the same period a year ago.
