‘What ifs’ could decide ACCC call on ANZ-Suncorp deal
A new independent expert’s report could give the ACCC fresh ammunition to block the Suncorp-ANZ deal. But it could also launch a lawyers’ picnic.
A new independent report into ANZ’s $4 billion merger with Suncorp’s banking division could give the ACCC the ammunition to block the deal – providing the competition watchdog is prepared to make a series of assumptions that ANZ and Suncorp may well want to test in court.
The report, by British competition expert Mary Starks, is unfortunately limited by the fact it did not take into account Suncorp’s and ANZ’s responses to the ACCC’s statement of preliminary views.
