We’re still waiting for the silver bullet for grocery prices
Cost of living pressures may have led to the current rush of grocery inquiries, but we’re no closer to finding the solution.
It’s deeply ironic that the avalanche of inquiries into the supermarket sector sparked by concerns about the rising cost of groceries has so far resulted in ideas that may well push grocery prices higher.
That is not to say that Craig Emerson’s recommendation to make the code of conduct governing the way supermarkets deal with their suppliers mandatory is not a good idea. The power imbalance between big retailers and small suppliers is out of whack, and the current voluntary code lacks teeth; putting the ACCC in charge of a mandatory code, and threatening big penalties for systemic abuses of power, is a sensible step.
