This is what is driving Telstra and TPG’s shock tie-up

By giving its great rival a calculated leg-up, Telstra is gaining access to vital spectrum that will help it quench consumers’ insatiable hunger for data. 

It’s often said that the sign of a good deal is when both sides are left a little unhappy. But Telstra boss Andy Penn and his TPG counterpart Iñaki Berroeta were both bubbling with excitement on Monday about an infrastructure swap that essentially sees Telstra give TPG access to its mobile network in a regional zone covering about 18 per cent of the Australian population, in return for Telstra getting access to TPG’s 4G and 5G spectrum in these areas.
