Liberation Day or Capitulation Day? Markets brace for pain

On the eve of Donald Trump’s big tariff announcement, investors are frantically trying to work out if enough bad news is priced in.  

Every month, the Federal Reserve of Dallas puts out a survey of manufacturing activity in Texas. Alongside the data you’d expect – forward orders, capacity utilisation and labour indicators – there are also snippets of commentary that help explain the vibe on the ground.

In Monday night’s release, the word “tariff” appeared 21 times.
