Lessons for ACCC in TPG debacle
The TPG-Vodafone court loss is the biggest blow to the ACCC's credibility in years. Perhaps the government should examine whether we need a separate communications specialist regulator.
In keeping with past practice, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission will conduct a review of the decision-making behind its 18-month campaign against the TPG merger with Vodafone, which ended with a loss in the Federal Court.
This review process is admirable and not unreasonable given industry sources reckon the case cost the ACCC more than $20 million after it was forced to pay the costs of TPG and Vodafone.
