Facing up to a toxic culture among his traders, ANZ Banking Group's new chief executive Shayne Elliott is preparing to provide a strategy update to the market in February which will reveal his vision of ANZ's "core purpose".

Within weeks of the announcement on October 1 that he would succeed Mike Smith at the helm of ANZ from January 1, Elliott began work on a new strategy document to redefine ANZ's commitment to customers and to operate within community expectations.
