A truck carrying acid has crashed on the South Eastern Freeway overnight, resulting in lengthy road closures.

The prime mover – carrying containers of acid – ran off the freeway near the Callington exit and crashed into the median strip barrier before 1am on Tuesday.

The 52-year-old male driver, of Victoria, was momentarily trapped in the cabin of the truck and was taken to Murray Bridge Hospital with minor injuries.

Police closed the freeway for all eastbound traffic between Monarto and Callington overnight and the closure remained in place on Tuesday morning.

It was not expected to be reopened until Tuesday afternoon as investigations into the crash continued.

Traffic is being diverted to the Old Princes Highway.

Speed restrictions are in place for westbound traffic.
