The site of South Australia’s largest cannabis crop was ransacked and looted in the days after police dismantled the crop and removed thousands of plants and more than $1.8m worth of the drug.

The news came as the Supreme Court granted bail to several of the people accused of cultivating the crop, including allowing one woman back to the site to continue tending to a crop of capsicums.

Eight people were arrested on December 29 when police raided the property on Nemesis Court in Buckland Park.

Police located 7264 cannabis plants in various stages of growth across several green houses on the property.

On long drying racks was also 336kg of cannabis with an estimated street value of around $1.8m.

It took police three days to dismantle the set up which is reported to have been the largest individual operation in the state’s history.

But after the crime scene tape had come down and the last police officer had left the scene, other people entered the ten-acre property.

A police spokeswoman confirmed that sometime between December 29 and January 6 a house at the property where several of the accused had been living was broken into.

“A Samsung Fridge, two washing machines and a television were stolen,” she said.

“Additionally four petrol engine agricultural pumps and white Toyota Hilux SA registration XNM036, were stolen from sheds behind the house at the rear of the property.”

The car is understood to have been found burnt out in the northern suburbs.

Police have confirmed they are continuing to investigate the break-in.

Initial reports on the day of the raid were that the eight people had fled when police arrived, but during Supreme Court hearings in early January more details emerged.

Helen Luu, for Le Vu Nguyen, 50, who owns the property where the greenhouses were found, said her client had not hidden from police or fled.

Justice Judy Hughes heard that Le Vu had allegedly been seen near the drying racks in green house six before exiting and being arrested.

“He accepts that he was there,” Ms Luu said.

“In fact it was his business premises and Mr Le did not flee from the scene.”

Ms Luu said her client had 54 glass houses on the property, several of which were rented, and that he grows cucumbers, tomatoes and capsicums for sale.

Michael Abbott QC, for Le Phuong Thi Thanh, Le Vu’s sister, said his client contested any accusation from police that she had been hiding under plastic in one of the grow rooms.

He asked Justice Hughes to release his client on bail so she could return to the Nemesis Court property and harvest a crop of capsicums which would otherwise rot on the vine.

Justice Hughes granted bail to both accused, in part because of delays before going to trial as well as difficulties in leaving the state because of COVID-19.

The eight accused will appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court in August.
