SA Police appalled by eight drink and drug drivers caught with kids in single day

Eight “irresponsible” South Australian drivers have been caught with alcohol or drugs in their system – and with their kids on board – in a single day. See where they were nabbed.

Eight “irresponsible” drivers have been caught driving their kids to or from school under the influence of drugs or alcohol in a single day across the state.

In the latest police blitz on Monday, drivers near school zones were targeted and more than 1200 alcohol tests and 109 drug screening tests were done.

Two vehicles were impounded, and one person was issued an immediate loss of licence during the operation.

The offenders included:

A man, 50, from Clare who dropped children off at school, recording a blood alcohol reading of 0.083, nearly two times over the legal limit of 0.05;

A woman, 33, from Roxby Downs who was dropping of her child at school and had a blood alcohol reading of 0.054;

A woman, 37, from Loxton who was picking her children up from school, who tested positive to a number of drugs;

A man, 28, from Morphett Vale who dropped a child off at school and tested positive to meth;

A woman from Port Pirie South who had children in the car, and tested positive to meth;

A man, 27, from Elizabeth Downs who dropped his child off at school with a positive result to meth;

A woman, 28, from Hillcrest with a child in the car who tested positive to THC and was driving while suspended;

A man, 29, from Peterborough who dropped a child off at school who tested positive to THC.

Superintendent Bob Gray, in charge of the Traffic Service Branch, said driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol is never acceptable, and inexcusable while children are present.

“These drivers have shown a complete lack of regard for the safety of themselves, their young passengers, other road users and pedestrians,” Superintendent Gray said.

“Children and pedestrians have a right to feel safe in their school community and police regularly conduct these operations to ensure irresponsible, dangerous drivers are caught and penalised,” he said.
