Police officer allegedly punched in face in Walkley Heights arrest, while two men assaulted in separate CBD attacks

It was a violent Saturday night in Adelaide with three separate assaults. It was a violent weekend in Adelaide, with a police officer punched in the face during a dramatic arrest. Another man is in a serious condition after a CBD brawl, while a delivery driver received minor injuries after being hit in the face nearby.

Police received a report of two men acting suspicious in Frances Ave, Para Hills, around 3.30pm Saturday.

They found two men in a Subaru station wagon and when they tried to approach the pair, one man allegedly tried to punch an officer and ran off.

While an officer was reaching into the car to remove the keys, the other man allegedly reversed the car, clipping the side of the patrol vehicle. The man who fled was able to get back into the Subaru and the pair drove away.

Traffic patrols discovered the Subaru at a shopping centre at Walkley Heights just before 5pm the same day. The suspects attempted to flee but were quickly arrested.

One officer was punched in the face and suffered an injury to his hand during the arrest.

A 40-year-old Maitland man, and a 42-year-old Northfield man were arrested and taken to Lyell McEwin Hospital where they both required treatment for ingesting unknown substances.

They have both been charged with a number of offences, including assaulting an emergency worker, endangering life, being unlawfully on a premises, driving disqualified, and theft.

The men were refused police bail and will appear in the Elizabeth Magistrates Court on Monday.

Meanwhile, a man was taken to hospital in a serious condition after he was allegedly assaulted in the CBD in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Police were patrolling Hindley St about 1.30am Sunday when they witnessed a fight and watched a man fall to the ground. Police intervened and used pepper spray on one of the men.

A 18-year-old Noarlunga Downs man was arrested at the scene and charged with causing serious harm to another. He was refused bail, and will appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Monday.

The victim, a 30-year-old Blair Athol man, was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital where he remains in a serious condition.

And a delivery driver was also assaulted overnight in the city, this time while on a scooter on Gouger St.

Footage has emerged of the male driver, who was wearing a face mask, on his scooter at an intersection on Gouger St. Two men – one of whom was holding a dog – approach him and he is hit in the face.

Police confirmed they were called to Gouger St just after 6.30pm Saturday, after reports a male delivery driver had received minor injuries after he was assaulted by a man not known to him. Investigations are continuing.

A female worker at Szechuan Valley restaurant, across the road from where the incident occured, was working at the time of the assault.

The woman, who did not wish to provide her name, said she saw the video of the assault on the internet.

“There was a guy who was punched by some one next to our restaurant,” she said.

“It was quite scary I think, because the man didn’t do anything.”
